After much debate I went with a Chris King headset for my new Surly Moonlander. I love Chris’s statement for their headsets of:
User serviceable and likely to outlast a few frames.
We believe this component so well represents us that we offer a 10-year warranty on all models.
I think this pretty well sums up why you purchase their product!
I purchased a silver CHRIS KING NOTHREADSET™ 1 1/8″. I am going for a retro seventies / NASA look for my Moonlander, being a child of the 70′s as Mike Watt puts it.
I do not own a headset press, with Chris King Headset adaptors and related tools (they are a big investment) so I went to a local bike shop to have it installed. The shop owner was great and showed me how to install the headset. I was unsure if the frame would need to be faced and reamed for headset installation. The bike shop owner said years ago all frames need to be faced and reamed but he has not seen a frame that needed it in many years. He mentioned most modern frames are ready to have the headset pressed from the factory.
